FAQ

I can't see anything, is the camera dead?

No, the cameras are working fine as long as you can see the time counting in the top left corner of the image.
But it is essential to know that Halifax has an average of 101 foggy days per year (read more about the climate of Halifax, Nova Scotia). Since most cameras are mounted on the roof of buildings you will see a gray image during the day and a black image in the night. Nothing else.

Why are ads on this page?

Unfortunately, the donations we receive are not enough to cover the costs involved to run this service. We decided to improve this situation through advertising. We encourage you to visit the advertising businesses and help us to operate the cameras in the future. Thank you!

The image quality is amazing. What kind of cameras are you using?

We are using weather proof high resolution cameras from MOBOTIX. For more information please contact independis inc. (www.independis.com)

Why aren't the cameras 'streaming'?

There are many reasons. One of the answers is: streaming would increase the data transfer on our servers by factor 5 to 10. Currently we utilize a bandwidth of 10 (ten) terabyte (1 TByte = 1,000 GByte) per month. The other reason is: everybody should be able to see these great live views regardless of computer type, operating system or browser without plug-ins. Unfortunately, streaming video still needs plug-ins and/or some other proprietory software beside your internet browser. With our approach you can watch novascotiawebcams.com even on your iPhone or BlackBerry if you want. Try it!

Why aren't the cameras user controllable?

With more than 500 visitors per hour it doesn't make sense to implement a pan/tilt/zoom mechanism and only a few people would be able to control it. The rest has to watch what a minority wants to see. Our solution: we are continuing to install cameras for simultaneous viewing of different locations.

Do you want to install a camera on my location/in my city?

Please contact us, we are always looking for excellent and suitable locations to expand our network in Halifax, Nova Scotia or even across Canada. If you are the owner of a building and want to support our great idea, we are looking forward to speaking to you.

I have a website and want to include one of the webcams. Can I do that?

Our webcam images are copyrighted material. We may grant permission to other website owners but please contact us before you use any images.
