Gateway to Nova Scotia's Scottish Heritage

Northumberland ShoresTraffic

The Pictou Causeway connects the town of Pictou to the mainland, offering sweeping views of Pictou Harbour—one of the most historically significant waterways in Canada. It was here in 1773 that the ship Hector arrived carrying the first wave of Scottish Highland settlers to Nova Scotia, earning Pictou the title "Birthplace of New Scotland." Today, the town celebrates this heritage through the Hector Heritage Quay, where a full-scale replica of the original ship sits proudly at the waterfront.

Beyond its rich history, Pictou charms visitors with its vibrant downtown filled with local artisan shops, cozy cafés, and the famous Pictou County pizza—a regional delicacy featuring a distinctive brown sauce. The surrounding area offers sandy beaches, scenic hiking trails, and the picturesque Northumberland Strait, making it an ideal destination for both history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts.

This highway camera from the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation & Public Works monitors traffic and road conditions on Highway 104 East at the Canso Causeway. Opened in 1955, the causeway is the sole road connection between mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island, spanning the Strait of Canso. At 1,385 metres long, it remains one of the deepest causeways in the world. The camera updates once per hour, providing periodic snapshots to help drivers check weather conditions, visibility, and traffic before crossing to or from Cape Breton.
