Peggy's Cove Lighthouse

Nova Scotia's most photographed lighthouse

4KPopularSouth ShoreLighthousesDiningHistory

Perched dramatically atop smooth, glacier-carved granite boulders, Peggy's Cove Lighthouse is Nova Scotia's most iconic landmark. Located just 40 km southwest of Halifax along the scenic Lighthouse Route, this classic red-and-white beacon has drawn visitors from around the world since 1868. The surrounding fishing village—home to fewer than 50 residents—offers a glimpse into the traditional Maritime way of life, with weathered fishing shacks, lobster traps, and colourful boats dotting the harbour.

According to local legend, the cove was named after Margaret, the sole survivor of a shipwreck in 1800. The villagers called her "Peggy," and her adopted home became Peggy's Cove. Today, visitors can explore the iconic lighthouse (which also served as Canada's only post office inside a lighthouse until 2009), browse local artisan shops, and enjoy fresh seafood at the beloved Sou'Wester Restaurant, a family-run establishment that has welcomed guests since 1968. Be sure to stay on marked paths—the rocks can be slippery and waves unpredictable—but don't miss the chance to witness one of Atlantic Canada's most breathtaking coastal views.

Digby sits at the heart of Nova Scotia's scallop fishing industry, earning its reputation as the "Scallop Capital of the World." The town's picturesque waterfront overlooks Annapolis Basin, where the world's highest tides rise and fall twice daily, and a fleet of distinctive red-and-white scallop boats work the rich waters of the Bay of Fundy. This camera captures the view from the Fundy Complex, a waterfront landmark that has welcomed visitors for over 60 years.

The complex is home to The Fundy Restaurant—a local institution serving fresh-off-the-boat seafood across five distinct dining areas, a three-tier balcony, and an 80-foot solarium with sweeping harbour views. Next door, Dockside Restaurant and Bar offers casual waterfront dining, while Dockside Whale Watching and Charters launch right from the floating dock below. In summer, you might spot minke whales, seals, and seabirds just offshore.

Digby also serves as a gateway to the province, with the Saint John ferry connecting Nova Scotia to New Brunswick across the Bay of Fundy. Whether you're sampling the famous Digby scallops, watching the fishing fleet come in, or simply taking in the Maritime atmosphere, this historic waterfront delivers an authentic taste of coastal Nova Scotia.

Accommodations

This camera offers a unique perspective of Peggy's Cove from Holy Mackerel, a whimsical gift shop in the heart of Nova Scotia's most beloved fishing village. The view captures the picturesque cove inlet where colourful fishing boats bob alongside weathered wharves, lobster traps stack high, and the timeless rhythm of Maritime life unfolds daily. Just steps away, the famous lighthouse stands sentinel on its glacier-smoothed granite, drawing visitors from around the world.

Peggy's Cove remains a working fishing village with fewer than 50 year-round residents, yet it welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually who come to experience its rugged beauty. The surrounding shops and galleries—including Holy Mackerel's curated collection of Atlantic Canadian artisan crafts—offer authentic Maritime treasures. Whether you're watching lobster boats head out at dawn or taking in the soft glow of sunset over the cove, this vantage point showcases the essence of coastal Nova Scotia at its finest.
