The Windsor Salt Mine in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, is an underground rock salt mine opened in 1959 by the Canadian Salt Company Ltd., now Windsor Salt. Discovered accidentally in 1953, the mine supplies all of Nova Scotia's road salt, with most mining taking place under the Pugwash River, and also produces pure salt for food, industrial, and water softening uses. The process involves underground rock salt extraction, surface crushing and screening, and an evaporation plant for high-purity fine salt.
