Fundy Discovery Site
Gateway to the world's highest tides within the Cliffs of Fundy UNESCO Global Geopark
The Fundy Discovery Site offers one of the most accessible windows into one of nature's greatest spectacles—the legendary tides of the Bay of Fundy. This camera overlooks the Salmon River where it meets the Cobequid Bay, capturing the dramatic transformation that occurs twice daily as 160 billion tonnes of water surge up the narrowing bay. What appears as a tranquil mudflat in one frame becomes a deep tidal river hours later, a visual reminder that you're witnessing the highest tides on planet Earth, rising and falling up to 16 metres with each tidal cycle.
As part of the Cliffs of Fundy UNESCO Global Geopark, the Discovery Site serves as a gateway to understanding 300 million years of geological history. The surrounding landscape tells the story of ancient continents colliding, volcanic eruptions, and the relentless sculpting power of Fundy's tides. From May through October, knowledgeable staff at the Visitor Centre share the science behind the tidal bore—that remarkable wave that rolls upriver as the tide returns—and help visitors time their explorations to witness the bay's most dramatic moments. The site's panoramic viewpoint reveals the vast tidal landscape in all its ever-changing glory.
Conveniently located just off Highway 102 at exit 14, mere minutes from downtown Truro, the Discovery Site invites visitors to linger and explore. Children delight in the natural playground inspired by the Bay of Fundy's unique ecosystem, while the nearby Cobequid Trail beckons walkers and cyclists to venture further into this remarkable landscape. Pack a picnic, watch the tide transform the river before your eyes, and stay for sunset—when the sky blazes orange and pink over the mudflats, you'll understand why this corner of Nova Scotia has earned global recognition as a place of extraordinary natural wonder.
