Peggy's Cove Lighthouse

Nova Scotia's most photographed lighthouse

4KPopularSouth ShoreLighthousesDiningHistory

Perched dramatically atop smooth, glacier-carved granite boulders, Peggy's Cove Lighthouse is Nova Scotia's most iconic landmark. Located just 40 km southwest of Halifax along the scenic Lighthouse Route, this classic red-and-white beacon has drawn visitors from around the world since 1868. The surrounding fishing village—home to fewer than 50 residents—offers a glimpse into the traditional Maritime way of life, with weathered fishing shacks, lobster traps, and colourful boats dotting the harbour.

According to local legend, the cove was named after Margaret, the sole survivor of a shipwreck in 1800. The villagers called her "Peggy," and her adopted home became Peggy's Cove. Today, visitors can explore the iconic lighthouse (which also served as Canada's only post office inside a lighthouse until 2009), browse local artisan shops, and enjoy fresh seafood at the beloved Sou'Wester Restaurant, a family-run establishment that has welcomed guests since 1968. Be sure to stay on marked paths—the rocks can be slippery and waves unpredictable—but don't miss the chance to witness one of Atlantic Canada's most breathtaking coastal views.

This highway camera from the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation & Public Works monitors traffic and road conditions on Highway 104 East at the Canso Causeway. Opened in 1955, the causeway is the sole road connection between mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island, spanning the Strait of Canso. At 1,385 metres long, it remains one of the deepest causeways in the world. The camera updates once per hour, providing periodic snapshots to help drivers check weather conditions, visibility, and traffic before crossing to or from Cape Breton.

The original Bluenose was launched in Lunenburg in 1921 and quickly became a legend. Built as a Grand Banks fishing schooner, she also proved unbeatable on the racecourse, defending the International Fishermen's Trophy against American challengers for nearly two decades. Her speed, grace, and the skill of Captain Angus Walters made her a source of immense national pride—so much so that her image has graced the Canadian dime since 1937.

Bluenose II was built in 1963 as a tribute to her famous predecessor, constructed in the same Lunenburg shipyard using the original plans. After a comprehensive rebuild completed in 2012, she continues to serve as Nova Scotia's sailing ambassador, promoting Maritime heritage and keeping the age of sail alive for new generations. From June through September, visitors can join harbour cruises or explore the deck during public tours.

Lunenburg itself is a fitting home port. This historic town, founded in 1753, boasts one of the best-preserved examples of British colonial settlement in North America. Its colourful waterfront, traditional shipbuilding heritage, and working fishing wharves earned UNESCO World Heritage designation in 1995. Whether you're watching Bluenose II glide into harbour, exploring the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, or simply strolling the historic streets, Lunenburg offers an authentic window into Nova Scotia's seafaring soul.

Check the schedule to see where you can find Bluenose II.
